Unity Over Division: Embracing the True Message of Islam

In the journey of life, our past is like an old book—filled with experiences, lessons, and sometimes, painful chapters. While history can be a valuable teacher, offering wisdom and perspective, not every page is worth reopening. If revisiting the past leads to enlightenment, growth, and unity, then it is a treasure worth unearthing. However, if digging into history only awakens sectarianism, hatred, and division, then wisdom lies in letting it rest.

Islam, at its core, is a religion of peace, unity, and submission to the will of Allah. The Qur’an, our guiding light, emphasizes the importance of brotherhood and compassion among believers. Allah says in the Holy Qur’an:

“The believers are but a single brotherhood, so make peace between your brothers.”
(Surah Al-Hujurat, 49:10)

This divine message reminds us that the essence of our faith lies not in what divides us, but in what unites us.

Throughout history, many communities have faced internal strife. Christians, for instance, were once divided—embroiled in conflicts and disputes. But with time, reflection, and a focus on shared beliefs, many of these divisions were bridged. Today, we witness a strong unity among Christians and Jews, who have learned to set aside theological differences and work together for common goals.

Regrettably, the Muslim Ummah today finds itself deeply fractured. Sectarianism, political rivalries, and historical grievances have splintered us into factions—each claiming the mantle of truth, often at the expense of unity and brotherhood. But this is not the path our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us.

The Prophet (PBUH) said:

“A Muslim is the brother of another Muslim. He neither oppresses him nor humiliates him.”
(Sahih Muslim)

Our first and foremost loyalty should be to Allah, our ultimate Creator and Sustainer. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is our perfect guide and role model, and the Holy Qur’an is our eternal source of truth and wisdom. Everything beyond these sacred sources—be it opinions, traditions, or interpretations—is human and fallible. These should be approached with respect, humility, and understanding, not used as tools for division or judgment.

Imagine an Ummah where Muslims across the world see each other not through the lens of sect, ethnicity, or ideology, but as fellow servants of Allah—equal, united, and bound by the common purpose of serving humanity and living righteously. This is the Ummah the Prophet (PBUH) envisioned. This is the Islam our hearts yearn for.

Let us, then, rise above our divisions. Let us stop weaponizing history and start building a future rooted in unity, compassion, and shared purpose. Let us treat each other with kindness, forgive where needed, and embrace the diversity that Allah, in His infinite wisdom, has created among us.

Let us remember that the message of Islam is one of mercy:

“And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds.”
(Surah Al-Anbiya, 21:107)

If our words or actions lead to pain, conflict, or hatred, we must ask ourselves: are we truly following the example of the Prophet?

In conclusion, the past is a mirror—use it to reflect and learn, not to ignite the fires of resentment. Focus on the present, where your actions can sow seeds of peace and love, and plan for a future where the Muslim Ummah stands united in peace, prosperity, and universal brotherhood.

May Almighty Allah open our hearts to the truth, guide us to the path of righteousness, and unite us as one Ummah under His mercy and light. Ameen.

The Messenger of God is more valuable than all our possessions—but equally important is the message of God.
