Beyond Skills: The Pursuit of True Humanity

✒️:. Himayun Hilal

Too often, we see the world as nothing more than a backdrop to our personal stage, upon which we must simply pass our days. We fall into the habit of thinking life is meant only to be endured, as though existence itself were an obligation. But life is not simply about spending time; it is also about investing time in growth, reflection, and purpose.

Many believe that acquiring skills and abilities will automatically transform them into good human beings. They imagine that competence alone will shape their character, refine their morals, and make them worthy of respect. Yet this is a misconception. A person cannot become complete through ability alone. No amount of talent or knowledge can guarantee true virtue. Humanity is not measured by the breadth of one’s skills, but by the depth of one’s understanding.

To be human is to strive to understand the world around us—to allow our awareness to expand rather than contract. We should not wage war against our own understanding, nor should we confine it within narrow boundaries. Instead, we must walk alongside it, letting it guide us with humility and openness.

A human being is not simply a self-contained creature, living in isolation and guided only by self-interest. We are shaped by psychological desires, emotional needs, and the longing to connect with something beyond ourselves. To recognize this is to begin to live with wisdom rather than habit.

True humanity requires more than the pursuit of competence. It calls for the courage to question, the patience to observe, and the grace to learn. In this way, we transcend mere existence and discover life’s deeper meaning.
