Digital Development and Human Challenges

✒️:. MOHD ISHAQ SHAH

There is no doubt that the human mind has developed in such a way that it has explored the scientific and technical sphere up to the ultimate level. There was a time when man relied only on radio and television for information and entertainment.
But the emergence of the internet and supportive gadgets like mobile phones, tablets, laptops, and desktops has provided extreme technical utility. Every bit of information and knowledge is available on the internet.
Social media apps have made the world ultimately connected and integrated. In short, we can say that the world has become a global village. Not only information, but also education, medical science, and meteorology have come to our fingertips. Nowadays, we do not need to purchase a newspaper, magazine, book, reference, or question bank from a bookshop or vendor. We just have to visit the concerned site and download the required material. It has given free access to every bit of knowledge and information. We can do any sort of paperwork using apps like Google Docs and Google Sheets. We can conduct video conferencing with our colleagues, classmates, friends, and relatives.

The other side of this advancement has led to a human predicament at an extreme level.
Online gaming, job and degree scams, paper leakage, blackmailing, and sexual abuses have increased tremendously. The situation has worsened to the maximum level.
Metaphorically, it can be termed a digital disaster that has washed away the human world.
The most tragic aspect is that it has adversely impacted children and youth. Most young minds have been preoccupied with technological dominance, and they seem to have become addicted to mobile phones.
Consequently, it is observed that youth have been indulging in various immoral activities. Apps like WhatsApp, Messenger, Snapchat, Instagram, etc. have given youth free access to immoral activities like chatting with girls, watching nude videos, and viewing vulgar scenes on mobile phones, wasting their precious energy overnight. Such activities have resulted in mental stress and psychological imbalance in these blooming buds. Overnight screen watching has affected their eyesight and nervous system adversely.

At the administrative level, we see that technology has made work very easy, but at the same time it has resulted in various frauds and cheating. One of the most tragic outcomes is that exam papers are no longer secure or secret.
There is software called remote access software that allows a person to access an exam paper while being outside the exam hall. The incident of the paper leak in respect of the K.V PGT/TGT Recruitment Examination 2022 that took place in Ladakh, and was confirmed by police authorities as well, deprived deserving candidates of employment opportunities. This could also add to the loss of national resources, as persons who get selected by unfair means cannot contribute back to the nation what is normally expected. Even the highest-level exams like NEET and NET are no longer safe and secure. Those papers were reportedly leaked, and all this is possible only by technological tools. Bribery has become outdated, and no one takes bribes in cash. It all happens through an online mode, leaving no proof for further reference.

In the banking system, these digital frauds are visible. Fraudsters have easy access to the accounts of customers. If a bank employee deducts only 50 paisa from every account holder, by evening he can accumulate lakhs of rupees and transfer them to his own account. Normally a customer thinks it may be due to some bank charges.
Forgery in documents and certificates is the most common practice today. Almost 90% of certificates are made by using various computer applications. Forgery in the date of birth is one of the prominent technical evils today, used only to conceal facts from authorities and the public so that one is materially benefitted more and more. But this is again cheating the nation, as it snatches opportunities from others.
Mutilation in videos and audios has resulted in various confusions, especially in religious and cultural matters. This is a common practice of persons working for some agencies to create disputes among various factions of society, which sometimes result in public clashes.

To conclude, no doubt the world has developed in the technical sphere, but in the moral sphere it has utterly failed, and humanity is at extreme risk. If we do not understand and act in time, the day is not far when we shall become puppets in the hands of technology, and a robotic sway will sweep away both humans and humanity.
