On the occasion of World Doctors’ Day, it is a matter of deep pride and heartfelt respect to chronicle the inspiring life and professional journey of Dr. Abdul Quyoom Lone — a remarkable son of Narvaw who rose from modest village roots to become a respected ENT surgeon, educator, and healer.

Early Life and Roots

Born on 15th March 1979, Dr. Abdul Quyoom Lone is the son of Mohammed Maqbool Lone and hails from the tranquil and culturally rich village of Malpora Narvaw in Baramulla district. Growing up amid the orchards and hills of Narvaw, his childhood was shaped by strong community values, family support, and a quiet determination to build a meaningful life through education.

Dr. Lone’s schooling began at Islamia Model High School, Malpora Narvaw Baramulla, where he studied up to the 3rd standard. This humble beginning laid the foundation for a lifelong love of learning and discipline.

He continued from the 4th to the 9th standard at Islamia Model High School, Fatehgarh Narvaw Baramulla, known locally for its dedicated teachers and nurturing environment. His academic journey was marked not just by excellent grades but by the quiet dedication that would come to define him.

For the 10th standard, he moved to Noor-ul-Islam School, Sheeri, where he further demonstrated academic promise. He then pursued his 11th and 12th studies in the Science stream at Government Higher Secondary School, Baramulla — one of the district’s premier institutions — balancing his studies with the daily commute from his native village.

Recognizing the importance of a solid foundation in science, he enrolled at Government Degree College, Baramulla, where he successfully completed the first two years of his B.Sc. program. Even during this period, his ambition was clear: to enter the noble field of medicine and serve society.

Entering the World of Medicine

In 2001, Dr. Abdul Quyoom Lone achieved what many in his community had only dreamed of — he secured admission into the prestigious Government Medical College Srinagar (GMC Srinagar) through a competitive entrance examination. This was a historic moment, as he became the first doctor from Narvaw whose entire basic schooling was done in local village schools to be selected into GMC Srinagar on merit.

This milestone was not just personal — it was a moment of collective pride for Malpora, for Narvaw, and for every family that saw in his journey the transformative power of perseverance and education.

Medical Training and Specialization

After completing his MBBS, Dr. Lone’s passion for learning persisted. He undertook his residency and house jobs at two of Kashmir’s premier medical institutions:

  • SMHS Hospital, Srinagar
  • SKIMS Soura, Srinagar

These formative years provided exposure to complex clinical cases and helped refine his diagnostic and surgical skills. His interest naturally gravitated toward the field of ENT, Head and Neck Surgery — a specialty requiring precision, patience, and empathy.

Driven by this passion, Dr. Lone completed his postgraduate studies (MS) in ENT, Head and Neck Surgery from the Department of ENT at SMHS Hospital / GMC Srinagar.

Recognizing his capabilities and commitment, he was selected as a Medical Officer in J&K Health Services through the Jammu & Kashmir Public Service Commission (PSC) — a prestigious achievement that further validated his growing reputation as a dedicated doctor.

Professional Career and Service

Following the completion of his postgraduate studies, Dr. Lone began his formal service journey at Sub-District Hospital (SDH) Sopore under J&K Health Services.

Over three years at SDH Sopore, he performed hundreds of ENT surgeries, managed the outpatient department (OPD), and earned respect for his patient-centered care and clinical excellence.

His growing experience led to his transfer to the Department of ENT at District Hospital Baramulla, where he served as Registrar and Senior Resident for three years — during the critical period of establishing the new Government Medical College Baramulla. Beyond patient care, he played a key role in mentoring young doctors and helping establish essential clinical services.

Currently, Dr. Lone is serving at the Associated Hospital of Government Medical College Handwara, based at SDH Langate, where he continues to work as a trusted ENT specialist. His daily service reflects decades of learning, dedication, and a steadfast commitment to improving lives across the region.

Legacy and Inspiration

Dr. Abdul Quyoom Lone’s life story holds deep significance for Narvaw:

  • He is the first doctor from Narvaw to gain admission to GMC Srinagar through an entrance exam.
  • He is among the few from the valley whose entire schooling was completed in local village schools, proving that humble beginnings can lead to extraordinary achievements.

Throughout every stage — as a student, surgeon, and teacher — he has remained deeply connected to his roots, carrying the aspirations of his community with grace and humility.

A Tribute on World Doctors’ Day

As a cultural custodian from Narvaw Baramulla, I, Dr. Manzoor Ahmad Rather, take immense pride in celebrating the life and contributions of Dr. Abdul Quyoom Lone on this World Doctors’ Day.

His story is not merely one of academic and professional success — it is a testament to vision, discipline, and the power of education. It is the journey of a village boy from Malpora Narvaw who dared to dream, worked tirelessly, and chose to serve with compassion.

On behalf of Narvaw, and every aspiring student who dares to hope, we salute Dr. Abdul Quyoom Lone for his service, humility, and unwavering dedication to medicine.

May his story continue to inspire generations to come.
