Jammu: A controversial statement by BJP MLA Chandra Prakash Ganga has drawn sharp criticism after he alleged that the Gujjar tribe, a Scheduled Tribe (ST) community in Jammu and Kashmir, is contributing to the region’s drug menace and acting as Over Ground Workers (OGWs).
The remarks, seen as a direct attack on the Gujjar community, have stirred political backlash and public anger, with many calling for action from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership.
Responding to the statement, Choudhary Javed Iqbal, a Member of the Legislative Assembly from the Budhal constituency, strongly condemned the remarks, terming them “reprehensible” and “an assault on the Gujjar community.”
I strongly condemn this reprehensible statement by Hon’ble MLA Mr. Ganga. His words are not only irresponsible but amount to vilifying an entire community. I urge BJP national president J.P. Nadda to take cognisance of such loudmouths. The silence of Gujjar leaders within the party is equally disappointing,” the MLA said.
Public attention has now turned to BJP MP Gulam Ali Khatana, who hails from the Gujjar community. Many are demanding that he publicly respond to the allegations made by his party colleague.
One user on X posted, “According to this BJP MLA, Gujjar Tribe (ST) is responsible for fueling Drug Menace in Jammu and Kashmir and is also acting as OGWs. Will MP MP Rajya Sabha Er Gulam Ali Khatana, a BJP MP who represents Gujjar community respond to such allegations?”
Former JK minister and PDP member, Naeem Akhtar, said, “Mr Ganga a senior BJP leader was dropped by @MehboobaMufti as minister following his march in support of the rapists of 8 year old Gujjar girl in Kathua. Here he’s blaring out the actual feelings of BJP against Gujjar Bakrwal community. Just because they are Muslims. Demonisation.”
