J&K High Court Quashes The PSA Detention of Former President of Bar Association Nazir Ronga

The Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court has quashed the preventive detention of senior advocate Nazir Ahmad Ronga, a former president of the JK High Court Bar Association. Ronga was detained under the Public Safety Act (PSA) last year, but Justice Sanjay Dhar ruled that the allegations against him were vague and lacked substantial evidence.

Ronga was arrested from his Srinagar residence on July 11, 2024, and shifted to Kot Bhalwal Jail in Jammu. His family was not informed of the PSA charges at the time of his detention, which was ordered by the Srinagar District Magistrate. The court’s judgment was in response to a habeas corpus petition filed by Ronga’s wife, Bilquees Ronga, who argued that his detention was baseless and politically motivated, damaging his reputation and career.

Notably, Ronga was also detained in 2019 under the PSA before the revocation of Article 370. The court’s decision to annul his detention is a significant development in the case. (reported by KNT)
