Jammu and Kashmir Anjuman-E-Sharie Shian President Aga Syed Hassan Mosavi Al-Safavi strongly condemned the summoning of Journalists to Police stations purely for doing their Duty .
In a statement Aga Hassan said “disturbing is the manner in which journalists who report on these developments are being summoned, intimidated, and compelled to sign affidavits, undertakings, or bonds at police stations.
Further Aga said, such actions are unacceptable in a democratic society. Religious spaces cannot be treated as surveillance targets merely on the basis of identity, and journalism that reports facts in public interest cannot be criminalised. Harassing reporters for doing their professional duty amounts to an attack on press freedom and creates a chilling effect on free expression.
“The democracy guarantees freedom of religion and freedom of the press. Any action that undermines these guarantees must be reviewed immediately. I urge the government to clarify the legal basis for these actions, ensure that journalists are not harassed or coerced, and reaffirm its commitment to constitutional rights and democratic norms”. He added
Media institutions must also stand firmly with their reporters. A free, independent, and fearless press is essential for accountability and cannot be compromised.
