Press Release
Kochi 12 jan ||| The Kerala High Court has delivered a landmark judgment upholding the professional rights and autonomy of physiotherapists across India. The verdict was passed in Writ Petition No. 41064/2025, filed by the Indian Association of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation against the Indian Association of Physiotherapists.
The Court ruled in favour of the Indian Association of Physiotherapists, clearly affirming that qualified physiotherapists are legally entitled to use the prefix “Dr.” and are authorized to practice independently without unwarranted professional restrictions. The judgment recognizes physiotherapy as a scientific, evidence based, and autonomous healthcare profession.
All objections raised by the Indian Association of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation were dismissed by the Court.
Reacting to the verdict, Prof. Dr. Sanjiv K. Jha, President of the Indian Association of Physiotherapists, termed the decision historic. He said the judgment formally recognizes the independent professional identity, dignity, and autonomy of physiotherapists in India.
He added that the ruling marks a decisive step forward for lakhs of physiotherapists and students nationwide. It strengthens the role of physiotherapists as primary healthcare professionals in prevention, treatment, and functional rehabilitation. The verdict is expected to improve patient access to physiotherapy services, promote ethical independent practice, and support advancement in education and research.
The Indian Association of Physiotherapists described the judgment as a defining milestone achieved through years of sustained advocacy, unity, and commitment to professional integrity.
The Association expressed gratitude to NCAHP, physiotherapists, academicians, students, and supporters across the country for standing together in the pursuit of justice and professional recognition.
