Kupwara court has granted bail to eight police personnel, including DySP Aijaz Ahmad Niykoo and Police Inspector Reyaz Ahmad, in a case related to the custodial torture of a fellow constable.
According to the bail order, the accused include DySP Aijaz Ahmad Niykoo, Reyaz Ahmad Mir, Jahangeer Ahmad Beigh, Mohd Younis Khan, Shakir Hussain Khoja, Tanveer Ahmad Malla, Altaf Hussain Bhat, and Shahnawaz Ahmad Deedad. All were lodged in Srinagar jail.
The court directed each accused to furnish a bail and surety bond of Rs 1 lakh. The accused cannot leave the territorial jurisdiction of the court without prior permission. They must deposit their passports with the court.
The order clearly states that the accused shall not intimidate witnesses or tamper with prosecution evidence. They have been directed to remain present before the trial court on every date of hearing unless exempted. Any violation of the conditions will lead to cancellation of bail.
The court authorized jail authorities to release the accused after verification of bail bonds, provided they are not required in any other case.
The case was argued by Adv B A Dar Associates and Law Firm. Advocate Bashir Ah Dar led the defense team, assisted by Advocate Saleem Jahangir Dar, Advocate Fida Hussain Dar, and Advocate Mir Abbas.
The accused were arrested in connection with the custodial torture of police constable Khurshid Ahmad Chohan in February 2023. The CBI registered the case on July 26, invoking multiple charges, including attempt to murder, after completing its probe.
