Baramulla Police Solves POCSO Case, DNA Identifies PerpetratorBaramulla, Jun 05 (ANH): Baramulla Police got a significant breakthrough in the investigation of a sexual assault case involving a mentally challenged minor girl.
Three individuals have been identified and arrested following extensive forensic and investigative efforts, with DNA evidence playing a crucial role in pinpointing the primary perpetrator. The case came to light in January 2025 when a 16-year-old girl was discovered to be 25 weeks pregnant during a medical examination at Sub-District Hospital (SDH) Magam.
Following this, Kunzer Police Station promptly registered FIR No. 04/2025 under relevant sections of the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act and BNS (Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita). The investigation, spearheaded by then-SHO Kunzer Inspector Sheikh Adil, revealed that the minor victim had been subjected to repeated assaults by multiple individuals. Early inquiries led to the arrest of two suspects: Mohd Rafiq Bhat, a resident of Dhobiwan, and Mohd Nasarullah Khan, a resident of Hayhama Lolab, Kupwara.
They were booked for rape, aggravated sexual assault, and kidnapping under POCSO provisions. However, subsequent DNA analysis conclusively excluded both of them as the biological father of the foetus.
Undeterred, investigators persisted in their efforts, shifting their focus to Jawad Alam, a resident of Champaran, as a prime suspect. Forensic matching subsequently confirmed that Alam’s DNA matched that of the foetus, thereby establishing him as the biological father and solidifying his involvement in the sexual assault that resulted in the pregnancy.
Police investigations have confirmed that all three arrested accused independently assaulted the victim on multiple occasions, with Jawad Alam being specifically responsible for the conception. In a statement, Baramulla Police reaffirmed its “relentless commitment to securing justice for the most vulnerable.” The force highlighted that despite initial complexities in forensic analysis, their team employed methodical investigation and advanced technology to identify all perpetrators. They reiterated a “zero-tolerance stance towards crimes against children” and assured rigorous prosecution of the accused.
Baramulla Police has urged anyone with additional information concerning this case or any related incidents to come forward. The force emphasized its dedication to combating crimes against women and children through prompt, professional, and sensitive handling of investigations. (ANH)
