Baramulla, Nov 4: Congress District President Mir Iqbal Ahmad has criticized the recent decision to raise the salaries of legislators in Jammu and Kashmir, calling it deeply unfortunate and highly insensitive at a time when people are struggling with economic hardship, unemployment, and rising prices.
In a statement, Mir Iqbal said the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, led by Omar Abdullah, has chosen to increase salaries and perks for legislators while ignoring the suffering of ordinary citizens.
He said both the present LG administration and the Present Omar Abdullah government have failed to address genuine public concerns. Issues like employees’ pending demands, daily wagers’ regularization, and the poor living conditions of laborers remain unresolved. Yet, when it comes to increasing their own benefits, decisions are taken overnight.
Mir Iqbal added that if the government truly cared about public welfare, it would prioritize raising employee wages, supporting laborers, and uplifting the poor instead of rewarding the privileged.
He stressed that public representatives are meant to serve the people, not seek comfort at their expense. True leadership, he said, requires empathy, accountability, and sacrifice, not self-interest.
Mir Iqbal urged the government to reconsider what he called an unjustified decision and focus instead on tackling unemployment, inflation, and the growing livelihood crisis across Jammu and Kashmir.
