Mudasir Rehman Dar balances stones to promote mindfulness, environmental awareness, and reconnection with nature in the Kashmir Valley.

Nouk e Qalam News ///

Kashmir based contemporary social artist Mudasir Rehman Dar has introduced stone and rock balancing as a performing art in the Kashmir Valley, offering a quiet counter to the pressures of constant digital engagement.

Hailing from Kulgam in Jammu and Kashmir, Dar is widely recognized for bringing this rare art form to the region. His gravity defying stone structures often leave viewers amazed, yet his work is rooted in stillness, patience, and deep focus rather than illusion.

Using naturally found stones from rivers and landscapes across Kashmir, he creates delicate vertical formations without glue, wires, magnets, or tools. Each piece relies solely on precise balance points and intense concentration. The process is slow, meditative, and intentional.

For Dar, stone balancing is more than visual art. It is a medium to convey harmony, environmental awareness, and inner balance. Each balanced stone reflects the fragile equilibrium of both nature and human life. He views the practice as a natural response to stress, overthinking, and screen dependence.

Dar frequently works with schoolchildren and young people, using stone balancing as a way to draw them outdoors. What begins as a challenge quickly turns into engagement with nature, encouraging mindfulness and reducing screen time.

Beyond stone balancing, he is internationally admired for his micro and miniature art. He has created some of the world’s tiniest paintings of Islamic holy sites on ring stones, pencil leads, and natural rocks. These works demand extreme precision and invite viewers to slow down and observe closely.

Often described as Kashmir’s first eco artist, Dar consistently highlights environmental issues through his work. He creates detailed art on Chinar leaves and transforms plastic waste collected from Dal Lake, the Veshow River, and other polluted areas into powerful visual statements. His art addresses pollution, consumer waste, and ecological neglect.

Guided by the philosophy that patience leads to mastery, Dar’s initiative Stack The Rock encourages people to see ordinary stones as tools for mindfulness and environmental awareness. While rock balancing is gaining global recognition as a therapeutic and performance art, for Dar it is also a way of life.

He is recognized as the first rock and stone balancing artist and eco artist from the Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir, India. His work bridges art, spirituality, ecology, and social responsibility, earning him recognition at both national and international levels.(NQ News)
