Srinagar, January 22: Senior Awami Itihaad Party (AIP) leader and MLA Langate, Sheikh Khursheed Ahmad has strongly condemned the summoning of journalists associated with The Indian Express and Hindustan Times by Cyber Police Station Srinagar, terming it a “deliberate act of harassment” and a direct attack on press freedom in Jammu and Kashmir.
In a statement issued here, Sheikh Khursheed said that calling journalists to police stations for routine reporting is not governance but intimidation. “This is a shameful attempt to muzzle independent voices and create fear among media professionals. Journalism is not a crime,” he said.
He warned that such tactics reflect growing intolerance towards facts and public accountability. “When the truth becomes uncomfortable, institutions are used to pressure those who report it. This is unacceptable in a democracy,” he added.
Sheikh Khursheed demanded immediate stoppage of all such summons and urged the administration to respect constitutional guarantees of free speech and freedom of the press.
