The Supreme Court, while hearing pleas seeking directions to restore the statehood of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, observed that the ground situation must be taken into consideration when granting statehood.
“You cannot ignore what happened in Pahalgam,” said Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, stated that the government had assured statehood after elections, but there is a peculiar situation in the region. He sought eight weeks to take instructions from the government on the matter.
