Srinagar, April 7: The Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) on Monday exposed what it called the \u201cshameless double standards\u201d of the National Conference (NC) over the controversial Waqf Bill, accusing the party of \u201cplaying a cruel joke\u201d on the sentiments of the Muslim majority of Jammu & Kashmir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a scathing statement issued to the press, AIP Chief Spokesperson Inam Un Nabi tore into the NC\u2019s duplicity, saying, \u201cNC\u2019s hypocrisy is touching new heights. On one hand, NC members are creating ruckus in the Assembly over the Waqf Bill, and on the other hand, the Speaker \u2014 who is from NC \u2014 is not even allowing a discussion on it. If NC is serious, why haven\u2019t they submitted a no-confidence motion against their own Speaker? They are clearly fooling the people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Inam Un Nabi revealed that it was, in fact, Sheikh Khursheed an AIP MLA who submitted the first adjournment motion in the Assembly, demanding a detailed discussion on the Waqf Bill. \u201cAs a Muslim-majority state, we have every right to deliberate on such a sensitive issue that directly impacts our religious and community institutions,\u201d Inam said, calling the silence of the Speaker and NC leadership \u201cdeeply suspicious and politically motivated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Taking a direct swipe at Omar Abdullah, Inam questioned how the former Chief Minister could justify receiving Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiran Rijiju \u2014 the very man who tabled the Waqf Bill in Parliament \u2014 with full protocol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOmar Abdullah could have easily refused to receive Kiran Rijiju as a mark of protest. But instead, he gave him a red carpet welcome like a loyal BJP ally. Is this what resistance looks like?\u201d Inam asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He accused the NC of enacting a \u201ctheatrical protest\u201d for media optics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAIP has been clear and consistent \u2014 the Waqf Bill is a direct assault on our religious institutions and must be rejected outright. The NC cannot hoodwink the people any longer.
