NO DEMAND FOR PRIVATE LABOURERS IN THE PRIVATE SECTOR IS INCREASINGFMCGDMAK CALLS FOR MONTHLY ALLOWANCES FOR JOBLESS LABOURERS IN KASHMIR

Srinagar, 16/11/2025:
The FMCG Distributors & Manufacturers Association of Kashmir (FMCGDMAK) has expressed deep concern over the worsening employment situation for private daily-wage labourers in the Valley, particularly in the aftermath of the 2025 Pahalgam terror incident and the prolonged downturn in the tourism sector.

During an interaction with representatives of Abrar Labourers Association, led by noted Sufi poet of Shahar-e-Khaas, Jenab Manzoor Damdar Sahib, FMCGDMAK acknowledged the alarming decline in labour demand across the private sector. The delegation highlighted the severe financial stress faced by thousands of labourers who possess valid labour department cards but remain jobless and vulnerable.

FMCGDMAK noted that the collapse of the tourism industry—historically the backbone of Kashmir’s daily-wage economy—has led to unprecedented job losses. With labour demand dropping sharply, many private labourers are now being offered wages below 50% of the accepted standards. This has pushed a large section of families to the brink of poverty, making even basic necessities difficult to sustain.

The Association emphasized that the crisis is both economic and humanitarian. Workers are being forced to choose between accepting heavily undervalued work or remaining unemployed. The continued uncertainty has also contributed to rising psychological distress and related social challenges in the community.

FMCGDMAK urged the Labour Department and the UT Government to immediately introduce monthly monetary allowances for all registered private labourers who have lost their livelihoods. The Association stressed that such support is essential to prevent further deterioration and to ensure that families are not pushed towards starvation or debt-driven distress.

With indicators pointing toward a bleak employment outlook for 2026, FMCGDMAK called for urgent, structured intervention to safeguard the future of Kashmir’s private labour force. The Association reiterated that protecting these workers is vital not only for social stability but also for the long-term economic resilience of the region.

FMCGDMAK stands with Kashmir’s labour community and will continue to advocate for their rights and welfare at every platform.
