UP India 23 Feb : Food safety officials have seized a large quantity of adulterated and expired food items during a series of raids across the city of Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, officials told India Today on Monday.Authorities confiscated approximately 10,000 kg of expired dates, valued at nearly Rs 50 lakh, from a wholesaler’s premises. Investigators found that fake labels and stickers were being used to pass off the dates as fresh. Nine samples from the consignment have been sent for laboratory testing, with legal action expected once the reports are received, according to India Today.
In addition, officials recovered 675 kg of adulterated khoya and a consignment of adulterated supari (betel nuts) worth over Rs 2 lakh. All seized items were destroyed to prevent them from entering the market.The special enforcement drive coincided with the Muslim observance of Ramzan and preparations by Hindus for the upcoming Holi festival. Food Safety and Drug Administration teams conducted raids in multiple areas to curb the circulation of unsafe products.
Officials warned that some traders exploit festive periods to sell adulterated or spoilt items for profit and urged the public to carefully check expiry dates, packaging, and product quality. Citizens were also asked to report any suspicious products to ensure swift action.The department confirmed that the campaign will continue in the coming days as part of broader efforts to protect public health and curb food adulteration.
The sale of dates and other dry fruits has picked up significantly in the days leading up to Ramzan.
