New Delhi: In a significant development, the Supreme Court of India has ordered a ban on a chapter in the NCERT Class 8 textbook that allegedly contained objectionable references related to corruption in the judiciary.
According to official sources, the apex court took serious note of the content after concerns were raised that certain portions of the chapter could undermine public confidence in the judicial system. The Court observed that while academic discussions on governance and accountability are important, they must be presented responsibly and without casting sweeping allegations on constitutional institutions.
The directive reportedly instructs the concerned authorities to withdraw or revise the chapter with immediate effect. The Court emphasized that educational material should uphold the dignity of institutions while encouraging critical thinking among students in a balanced and constructive manner.
The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is expected to review the content and make necessary amendments in compliance with the Court’s order.
Further details regarding the revised curriculum and implementation timeline are awaited.—(NK)
