Agriculture Minister Javid Ahmad Dar took serious cognizance of alleged manhandling of senior journalist by Tehsildar Baramulla

BWJA, NWJA express their gratitude for prompt intervention and efforts to resolve the matter amicably, called off boycott call

Baramulla: Javed Ahmad Dar, Minister of Agriculture Production, Rural Development & Panchayati Raj, Cooperative, and Election, took serious cognizance of the unfortunate incident involving the alleged manhandling of senior journalist Karamat Qayoom, Bureau Chief of All India Radio’s Shaherbeen program, by Tehsildar Baramulla, Mohammed Hussain Mir.

He termed the incident “unfortunate and uncalled for,” emphasizing the importance of the media as the fourth estate and its critical role in highlighting public issues and holding the government accountable

The Baramulla Working Journalist Association (BWJA) and the North Kashmir Working Journalist Association (NKWJA) express their gratitude for prompt intervention and efforts to resolve the matter amicably are deeply appreciated by the journalist fraternity.

During the resolution process, the Tehsildar tendered unconditional apology, stating that the incident was unintentional and that he did not recognize the senior journalist. He expressed deep regret for his actions in the presence of the Minister.

Earlier, Deputy Commissioner Baramulla Minga Shirpa had also apologized for the incident to media fraternity.

While we acknowledge the resolution of the matter, the BWJA and NKWJA reiterate the need for greater sensitivity and respect toward journalists, who play a vital role in upholding democratic values and ensuring transparency in governance. We hope such incidents will not recur and that the government will continue to support a safe and respectful environment for journalists to perform their duties without fear or hindrance.

The BWJA, NKWJA reiterates its commitment to safeguarding the rights and dignity of journalists. “We will continue to advocate for a free, fair, and independent press, and we call upon all stakeholders to join us in condemning this attack on press freedom,” spokesperson of BWJA stated.

Meanwhile, the BWJA and NKWJA have decided to call off their boycott of government functions in protest. Both associations had previously announced a boycott of all government events, press briefings, and official functions until a formal apology was issued by the Tehsildar and appropriate action was taken against him.
