Baramulla, Renowned trade union leader turned politician Mohd Rafique Rather has been elected as District President of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Baramulla.
Rather, a senior leader of the party, was elected by delegates representing all seven constituencies of the district during an election held at Dak Bungalow, Baramulla.
Regarded as an outspoken leader, Rather has earned name and recognition in politics in a remarkably short span of time and has emerged as a prominent voice in North Kashmir. Known for his forthright views and strong public engagement, he has established himself as an influential political figure in the region.
Rafique Rather joined the PDP in 2022 after leaving his government job, choosing to dedicate himself to public service and politics. His contribution towards strengthening the party’s organisational structure and grassroots presence across Baramulla district is widely acknowledged.
A former trade union leader, educationist and writer, Rather previously served as President of the Employees Joint Action Committee (EJAC), representing the interests of employees across Jammu and Kashmir. His extensive experience in public service and organisational affairs has contributed significantly to his political journey.
Rather also contested the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections from the Baramulla constituency on a PDP ticket, where he was defeated by the National Conference candidate.
His election as District President reflects the confidence and trust reposed in his leadership by party delegates. His experience in public service, organisational affairs and grassroots engagement is expected to further strengthen the party in the district.
Rather has also been representing his party on national television channels and has become a familiar face on both local and national television networks.
