When a Sunni Boy Offered Me Rs. 500 for a Rs. 25 Book

Several years ago, I took a Tata Sumo cab from Dal Gate heading to Pulwama, where I was employed at the e-Court in the District Court Pulwama.

While seated in the back of the cab, I retrieved the book “Tauba Kya Hai?” by Shaheed Murtaza Muttahiry (R.A.) from my bag. As I perused a few pages, a young man entered the cab near Sempoora, who I later learned was a Sunni.

Noticing the book, he expressed interest in reading it. I handed it to him, and he began to read intently. Without any distractions, he finished the book and appeared profoundly affected by the author’s insights.

His admiration for the work led him to request the book as his own. I responded, “Feel free to take it.” However, he then produced a Rs. 500 note and attempted to pay me for the book. I firmly declined to accept any money, instead providing him with the contact information of the bookseller where he could find additional titles.

His gratitude was overwhelming, and I felt a sense of joy knowing that a modest book, priced at only a few rupees, could have such a significant impact on someone’s life.
