Say No to Tobacco, Say Yes to Life: A Call to Action on World No Tobacco Day”

Every year on May 31st, people across the world observe World No Tobacco Day to spread awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco. In Jammu and Kashmir, the issue is especially serious. Tobacco is not only harmful to health—it is often the first step toward drug addiction. Many young people start by smoking or chewing tobacco, and later move on to stronger and more dangerous drugs.

Tobacco slowly harms the body, but more than that, it destroys families and ruins futures. It has become common to see teenagers smoking outside schools or in market corners. Most of them obtain tobacco easily from local shops, even though the law clearly states that selling tobacco to minors is prohibited. We urge all shopkeepers across Jammu and Kashmir: please do not sell tobacco to children. Your small action can help save someone’s life.

Schools also play an important role. Teachers and staff must keep a close watch on students, especially during breaks. Schools should conduct regular awareness programs about the dangers of tobacco and drug use. Students must feel safe to speak with teachers if they are facing pressure from friends to try smoking.

Parents are equally important in this fight. A child’s first learning always begins at home. Parents should talk openly with their children about tobacco and its harmful effects. Keep an eye on their behavior, friends, and habits. Most importantly, set a good example—if you smoke, your child is more likely to try it too.

Tobacco may seem small, but it can lead to very big problems. It is often the first step on the road to addiction. On this World No Tobacco Day, let us all come together—as parents, teachers, shopkeepers, and responsible citizens—and take a strong stand against tobacco. We must protect our children and give them a healthy, safe future.

Say no to tobacco. Say yes to life.
