Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Chowdhary Mohammad Ramzan asked the Central Government when it intends to return hydroelectric power projects to Jammu and Kashmir. He said the Centre has collected huge revenues for decades and has already recovered the full cost and profits from these projects. He raised the issue in the Rajya Sabha and sought a clear commitment and timeline on restoring ownership and control of J and K power resources.
He also highlighted the long pending Nichanhama Rajwar lignite project in Handwara. The project was initiated in 1989 but was abandoned due to the onset of militancy. He questioned whether the Government plans to revive this vital project to meet the region’s energy and employment needs.
In its reply, the Ministry of Power avoided a direct answer on the return of hydroelectric projects. It stated that any transfer is governed by existing MoUs and agreements. It did not clarify whether costs and revenues have been fully recovered or whether any decision is under consideration. On the Nichanhama lignite project, the Ministry said that lignite extraction is currently being carried out at the site.
