Baramulla, August 5: The Jammu & Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Baramulla, has strongly condemned the house arrest and detention of its senior leaders ahead of the party’s proposed peaceful protest against the abrogation of Article 370.
In a statement, the Party Spokesperson said that holding peaceful protests is a fundamental democratic right guaranteed under the Constitution of India. Preventing political leaders and workers from exercising this right is undemocratic and amounts to the suppression of democratic freedoms.
The Spokesperson said that 5th August is observed by the people of Jammu & Kashmir as a Black Day, as it marks the day when the region’s special constitutional status and identity were taken away through what the party describes as an illegal and unjustified decision.
He said that, in accordance with the directions of Party President Ms. Mehbooba Mufti, peaceful protest demonstrations were scheduled to be held at all district headquarters across Jammu & Kashmir. However, the administration thwarted the programme by placing almost the entire district leadership under house arrest or detention.
The PDP Baramulla Spokesperson termed the action arbitrary, unjustified and a direct assault on democratic values. He said that such measures cannot silence the voice of the people or suppress their peaceful and democratic expression.

- Mir Intikhab, District Organiser
- Er. Raziya Hassan, Former DDC & District President Woman’s wing.
- Adv Shaista Shaheen Pattan.
- Yasir Naik, District President, PDP Youth Baramulla
- Arif Sultanpuri, District Youth Secretary.
- Irfan Ali, Constituency Incharge Sopore.
- Ghulam Rasool Bhat, Zonal President Baramulla.
- Manzoor Ahmad, Zonal President Sopore.
- Abdul Hameed Bhat, Sopore
- Mohd Ashraf Ganaie
- Mohd Anwar, Sopore
- Khalid Bashir, Sopore

The Party demanded the immediate withdrawal of these restrictions and urged the administration to uphold democratic principles by allowing peaceful political activities without intimidation or coercion.
Reports of detention from other constituencies of District are awaited.
