Kashmir has witnessed many political leaders who have shaped its social and political landscape. Among the prominent contemporary figures is Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, a well-known political personality from Jammu and Kashmir. He is recognised for his outspoken nature, political convictions and willingness to raise important issues concerning the people of Kashmir.

Born on 19 September 1976, Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi belongs to Budgam district of Kashmir. He is the son of the late Aga Syed Mehdi, a respected religious and political personality. Growing up in a family with a strong political and social background, Ruhullah developed an interest in public affairs and politics at an early age.

Political Journey

Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi began his electoral political journey in 2002 when he was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Budgam constituency. He was re-elected in 2008 and 2014, establishing himself as an important political figure in central Kashmir.

In 2009, he became a Cabinet Minister in the Jammu and Kashmir Government, holding portfolios including Science and Technology and Animal Husbandry. His political journey reflects years of involvement in legislative and administrative affairs.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he contested from the Srinagar parliamentary constituency and secured a significant victory. His election to Parliament brought him into the national political spotlight and gave him an opportunity to raise issues concerning Jammu and Kashmir at a wider platform.

Politics, Principles and Public Issues

One of the most noticeable aspects of Ruhullah’s political personality is his outspoken approach. He has publicly expressed his views on issues such as the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, constitutional rights, reservation policy, unemployment and the concerns of students.

He has also spoken about the importance of keeping political promises and maintaining accountability towards the people. His disagreements with the National Conference leadership became increasingly visible over political commitments and the future direction of Jammu and Kashmir.

On 3 November 2026, he announced his decision to leave the National Conference and resign from his position as Member of Parliament. His announcement marked a significant development in Kashmir’s political landscape. He also expressed his desire to bring together dedicated young people who could contribute towards a new political direction.

A Message for the Younger Generation

Ruhullah’s political journey offers an opportunity to reflect on the importance of education, awareness, public participation and democratic values. His emphasis on political principles and the involvement of young people highlights the need for a generation that understands its rights as well as its responsibilities.

The youth of Kashmir need opportunities to participate in constructive discussions, question public decisions and contribute positively to society. Political awareness should not simply mean supporting a particular leader or party; it should also mean understanding democratic institutions and holding public representatives accountable.

Conclusion
Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi remains an important and prominent personality in contemporary Kashmiri politics. From his early political career in Budgam to his election as Srinagar’s Member of Parliament and his recent decision to leave the National Conference, his journey has been marked by significant political developments.

Whether people agree or disagree with his political positions, his career raises important questions about leadership, accountability, public trust and political principles. Ultimately, the real strength of democracy lies not in individuals alone, but in the voice, awareness and participation of the people.
