Srinagar, 28th October 2026
The Sikh Community of Kashmir today paid rich and heartfelt tributes to the martyrs who laid down their lives during the brutal tribal raids of 1947.
A solemn prayer program was organized by Sikh Sangat and Sikh Vidyak Samuh at the historic site of Choura Pattan, Baramulla — a place that witnessed one of the darkest chapters of Kashmir’s history. According to local history and elders, from 26th to 29th October 1947, hundreds of innocent Sikhs, including women and children, were martyred in the tribal attack while trying to save their honour, faith and identity.

Dozen of community members, youth and students gathered at the site to remember the supreme sacrifices of innocent Sikhs and other civilians martyred during October-November 1947 across Muzaffarabad, Baramulla, Uri, Choura Pattan and other areas.
Religious Program Held:
On the occasion, a religious Kirtan Darbar was held, followed by Ardas for the peace and eternal rest of the departed souls. The sacred Nishan Sahib was unfurled at the site as a mark of respect, resilience and remembrance. The atmosphere was filled with devotion and emotion as prayers echoed for the martyrs.
Speaking on the occasion, Sardar Parbjot Singh, Bibi Sehaj Kaur, Bibi Manleen Kour and Navdeep Singh said that the history of the 1947 tribal invasion is a painful and often ignored chapter for the Sikh community of Kashmir. They said that thousands of Sikhs were killed, displaced, and lost their homes and properties while protecting their faith and motherland. Their sacrifice is unparalleled but unfortunately has not been given due recognition in official history.
Young Sikh leader Angad Singh Khalsa, while addressing the gathering, said, “Our community members lost their precious lives while defending their honour and identity. They did not run away; they stood and offered their lives to safeguard their faith. We should always remember their supreme sacrifices, be it the killing of innocents here in Kashmir or in Jammu or in any part of the nation in 1947. The pain of 1947 is our collective pain. We should remember and recognise each other’s pain and stand together in future for the safeguard of the entire human race and brotherhood.”
He further said that the new generation must know what their forefathers endured.
