Rebuttal
A PDP-backed questioner recently asked Farooq Abdullah Sahib a question and subsequently made a statement that has raised serious political and historical questions.
The questioner asked:
- Does Farooq Abdullah Sahib regret the conversion of the Muslim Conference into the National Conference?
- He further stated that “the choice of the Qibla was wrong”. In the context of the discussion, this remark raises questions about whether he was referring to the decision of Maharaja Hari Singh regarding the accession of Jammu and Kashmir to India.
These are not ordinary political remarks. They relate to the political history of Jammu and Kashmir, the evolution of the National Conference and the circumstances surrounding the State’s accession to India.
The PDP should therefore clarify its position.
Does the party endorse the statement?
If yes, the PDP should openly own the position and explain it to the people.
If not, the party should unequivocally distance itself from the statement, condemn it and clarify whether any action will be taken against the person who made it.
Following yesterday’s Halla Bol discussion, the issue should not be brushed aside or left open to political ambiguity.
Questions concerning the history and constitutional relationship of Jammu and Kashmir with India require clarity and consistency.
The PDP must clearly state its position:
Does it stand by the statement, or does it reject it?
