Withdrawal of nearly ₹5,000 Crore Baramulla–Uri Railway Project a Devastating Blow to Region’s Progress: Omar Kakroo

Trackline should have changed but not project.

Former MC President Baramulla expresses deep concern over developmental stagnation, calling on citizens and stakeholders to unite for the Baramulla future

BARAMULLA, 26 Sep 2026: Former President of the Municipal Council Baramulla, Omar Kakroo, today voiced grave concern over the Ministry of Railways, Government of India’s decision to withdraw the proposed Baramulla–Uri railway line project, terming it a massive setback to the region’s socio-economic landscape.

The ambitious ₹5,000 Crore rail connectivity project was anticipated to transform trade, transport, and tourism in northern Kashmir, bridging vital regional gaps and generating widespread economic opportunities. Its cancellation, according to Kakroo, severely undermines the long-term developmental aspirations of Baramulla and its adjoining areas.

In a strongly worded statement, Omar Kakroo expressed bewilderment over the reaction of certain individuals and groups who have welcomed the cancellation or shifting of the project
“It is deeply perplexing and tragic to see some people celebrating the withdrawal of a major ₹5,000 Crore infrastructure initiative. Cheering the loss or shifting of crucial developmental projects from Baramulla is self-defeating.

Infrastructure does not belong to any political party—it belongs to the people, our youth, and future generations. I fail to understand how dropping a project of this magnitude could ever be a cause for celebration.

Highlighting the growing developmental standstill in the district, Kakroo stressed that Baramulla’s progress is slipping behind at a critical junction
“Baramulla’s development is going nowhere if we continue to witness vital projects being shelved or diverted without resistance. We cannot afford to remain silent spectators while opportunities that could redefine our economic future are taken away.”
Issuing an urgent call to action, Kakroo appealed directly to the public, civil society, trade bodies, and local leadership

“Wake up, Baramullians, wake up! We must rise above short-sighted political agendas and petty cheerleading over loss. It is time to speak with one unified voice and demand the development, infrastructure, and investment that Baramulla rightfully deserves.
